A female mentor, 29, has been charged with sexual misconduct with a 13-year-old student in New York City.
Aylin Canon was arrested Thursday accused of engaging in sexual activity with the teenager for four months, including at Canon’s Manhattan apartment and at a public school on the Lower East Side.
Canon worked as a mentor doing after-school work for Education Alliance before she was fired in May.
She was charged at Manhattan’s Central Criminal Court with sex acts, sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child.
The woman allegedly had sex with the child between February and June last year, sources told the New York Post.
The law enforcement source told the paper the child told her friends about Canon’s conduct and one of those friends told her mother who alerted authorities.
‘There is no place in the New York City school system for those who prey on children,’ said special commissioner for New York’s department of education, Anastasia Coleman.
The Department of Education emphatically stated Canon had never been employed by them.
Canon’s mother claims the child has fabricated the story, the New York Daily News reported.
‘It’s a lie. It was a setup. The girl said she was 17, not 13,’ Canon’s mom told the paper.
She said her daughter was a ‘good girl’ who would never do such a thing.
Canon, who appeared at Manhattan Criminal Court wearing a furry-hooded jacket, was detained on a $35,000 bond.
