Syracuse, N.Y. — Drake Grillo set a Carrier Dome record on Monday, and it could be one that stands for awhile.
Grillo, a 3-year-old from Auburn, became the youngest Nation Anthem singer in Dome history when he flawlessly nailed the song before the Syracuse women’s basketball team beat Niagara.
Grillo’s mother, Chelsea, said Drake loves sports and learned the words to the song by watching games on TV about a year ago. This wasn’t his first live audience, though. Drake did the honors before three Auburn Doubledays baseball games last summer.
Chelsea said Drake likes to ask when he can perform the song again. You have to wait your turn, buddy, she said she tells him. Other people want a chance, too.
Monday was a huge stage for Drake. It was a school day game at the Dome, drawing a paid attendance of 6,093. But wearing a tiny No. 44 jersey, he strode out onto the court and stole the show before the game even began. A few Orange players came over to first-bump him after the effort.
