New Mexico Democrats Aim to Demolish Pro-Life Criminal Abortion Law

A pro-life leader is urging New Mexico legislators to reconsider their pro-abortion beliefs before changing the state’s current abortion laws.

A strong pro-life criminal abortion statute was passed by New Mexico lawmakers in 1969 to go in place if Roe v Wade is ever overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Tara Shaver of Abortion Free New Mexico tells OneNewsNow it would be a strong law — if it was enforced in a state already known for allowing late-term abortions.

“The criminal abortion statute actually makes it a 4th degree felony to do an abortion for an elective abortion,” she says. “Essentially it does allow for abortions for like rape and in incest and like fetal abnormalities.”

Parts of the measure that are enforceable include a requirement that only a physician perform an abortion, and a woman must give her full consent before her child can be terminated.
