Democrat Gavin Newsom has won the Governor’s race in California, a state that has offered some of the strongest resistance to President Donald Trump.
Newsom defeated Republican businessman John Cox in the Tuesday election to succeed the outgoing Democratic Government Jerry Brown.
The 51-year-old was once married to former Fox News personality Kimberly Guilfoyle who is now in a relationship with Donald Trump Jr.
Guilfoyle, 49, left Fox to become vice chairman of America First Policies, a pro-Trump advocacy group and super PAC America First.
The couple started dating after the splitting of Trump Jr from Vanessa Trump – the mother of his five children.
Together, Trump Jr. and Guilfoyle campaigned hard for the midterm elections.
Guilfoyle, who registered as a Republican at the age of 18, was married to Newsom when he was mayor of San Francisco. In 2004 she told Harper’s Bazaar that she would vote for her husband as president.
Newsom, 51, served as a lieutenant governor under Brown and promised to pursue universal health care and a surge in housing.
As mayor of San Francisco, Newsom received the attention for ordering the issue of marriage licenses to same-sex couples before it was legal.
He defeated the Trump-endorsed John Cox with 59.1 percent to 40.9 percent for the governorship of the nation’s most populous state. He follows Democratic Government Jerry Brown to become the 40th governor of the state.
In his victory speech, he called out “rage agents who are determined to divide us.”
He told supporters in Los Angeles: “It’s been a tough two years ago, but tonight America’s biggest state is the biggest statement in America.
“We unmistakably – and in unison – say that it is time to roll the credits on the politics of chaos and the politics of cruelty.
“Now is the time to go far and go together. It is now time for decency, for facts, for trust, and now it is time for truth.”
He added: “Now it is time for leaders to lead. And for those agents of anger that are determined to divide us instead of uniting us, it’s time to pack it up and pack it up.”
