Brent Taylor, who temporarily stepped down as North Ogden mayor to deploy to Afghanistan with the Utah Army National Guard, died in Afghanistan Saturday, North Ogden City Councilman Phillip Swanson. ???Major Brent Taylor was killed in Afghanistan this morning. ???Initial reports indicate the attacker was a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. These reports also indicate the attacker was immediately killed by other Afghan Forces. The incident is under investigation,??? the Utah National Guard said in a statement.
Taylor graduated from Brigham Young University in 2006 with a BA in Political Science and a minor in Military Science, and in 2012 from the University of Utah with a Master of Public Administration, according to his biography on the city website. He served for 12 years as an officer in the United States Army National Guard, including seven years on Active Duty. He served two tours of duty in the Iraq War and one in Afghanistan, serving in Iraq as a convoy security commander and then as an advisor to an Iraqi national intelligence agency, his biography states.

The mayor of a small city in Utah was identified as the US servicemember killed Saturday in the Afghan capital of Kabul in what the US-backed coalition called an apparent insider attack.

Reports indicated the attacker was a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces and that the attacker was immediately killed by other Afghan forces, the NATO-led Resolute Support coalition said.

Mayor Brent Taylor was identified as the servicemember killed, according to a Facebook post by North Ogden City Councilman Phillip Swanson. Taylor was elected to the city council of North Ogden, about 45 miles north of Salt Lake City, in 2009 and became mayor in 2013, according to the city council website.

“We are devastated by the loss of our Mayor and friend, Brent Taylor,” the city said on its Facebook page.

“Brent had a profound influence on this community. He was the best of men with the ability to see potential and possibility in everything around him.”

Taylor temporarily stepped down as mayor to deploy to Afghanistan with the Utah Army National Guard, according to his biography on North Ogden’s website. He served 12 years as an officer in the United States Army National Guard, including seven years on active duty. Taylor also served two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Another servicemember, who has not been identified, was also wounded in the attack. The service members were evacuated to Bagram Airfield. The wounded servicemember is undergoing medical treatment and is in stable condition, authorities said.
