A transgender girl in middle school was barred from taking shelter with the other girls in her class during a safety lockdown drill in Stafford, Virginia.
The incident happened due to confusion over bathroom and locker room policies at Stafford County Public Schools, according to Equality SCPS, which describes itself as a ‘community of parents, students, and allies in Virginia seeking inclusive policies for LGBTQ+ students and staff in Stafford County Schools.’
‘When the drill began, a particular class of children took shelter in the bathroom/locker room nearest them as they were in PE [Physical Education],’ the group wrote on Facebook on October 3.
‘One student was prevented from entering either the boys or girls locker room while the teachers discussed where she should go.’
Equality Stafford’s co-facilitator Lesley Woods told Fox 5 News that the district has a history of inconsistent handling of transgender students’ bathroom and facility use.
School district spokesperson Sherrie Johnson issued the following statement: ‘Stafford County Public Schools does not comment on individual student incidents to avoid divulging confidential information. However, the new superintendent has requested a review of all protocols and procedures to ensure that all children are treated with dignity and respect.’
Equality Stafford has asked those interested in the community to attend a school board meeting on Tuesday at 7pm Eastern, in protest of the incident, which took place on September 28.
