Smartphones should be banned from live shows because audience members are becoming too obsessed with capturing the perfect “Instagram moment”, one of the world’s leading concert designers has said.

Artists are insisting on ever more elaborate visual theatrics during their tours because they are worried about how their performances look on social media, LeRoy Bennett has said.

The most recent tour of Drake, the American rapper, featured a yellow Ferrari that appeared to float about the audience and Taylor Swift has performed in front of towering fork-tongued snakes. Laser shows, large LED screens and elaborate pyrotechnics are increasingly common features of global tours.
