TEXT: Matthew 6:19-21
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
In our last message, we talked about why laying up treasures for ourselves on earth is not a good idea. Jesus reminds us that, on earth, “moth and rust doth corrupt” and “thieves break through and steal.” However, he does not discourage us from laying up treasure in totality. Instead, He commands us to lay up the right kind of treasure and to lay it up in the right place. “Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.” Isn’t it wise to seek treasure that will not decay and that cannot be taken away?
What does it mean to lay up treasures in Heaven? Warren Wiersbe writes, “It means to use all that we have for the glory of God. It means to ‘hang loose’ when it comes to the material things of life. It also means measuring life by the true riches of the kingdom and not by the false riches of this world.”
Whatever treasures we do have on this earth, we ought to regard as investments to use for the Kingdom of God. For the unsaved person, earthly treasure is all that he can seek. But, for the saved person, earthly treasures are tools to be used temporarily because our true treasure is in Heaven. Everything we have — money, cars, houses, stock investments, food, clothing — can, in some way, be used for the Kingdom. By using these temporary treasures for God, we build up eternal treasures in Heaven.
Ray Pritchard said, “How do you make a deposit on earth for dividends to be paid in heaven? Here in one sentence is the answer: You store up treasures in heaven by investing your money [and your material resources] in things that will last for eternity. Only two things last forever — the Word of God and people. Since only the Word of God and people will last forever, that’s where we ought to be putting our money. The ultimate investment you can make is to invest your life in getting the Word of God to people! That’s an investment that will last forever.”
Each of us can, in our own, unique way, contribute to the furtherance of the Word of God and the Gospel of Christ. Only when we do that, will we lay up treasures in Heaven. These treasures are rewards given to us by Christ himself. And, what Christ gives, like our salvation, none can take away.
Our prayer ought to be the same as Frances Havergal as expressed in these words:
Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my intellect and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose.
Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
