A leading Christian law firm is applauding Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ promise that the Justice Department will protect people’s religious freedom and convictions.
The nation’s top law enforcement officer made the vow Monday, speaking at a Justice Department summit on religious liberty. He warned of a “dangerous movement, undetected by many” that he said was eroding protections for religious Americans. “There can be no doubt. This is no little matter,” he stated. “It must be confronted and defeated.”
Sessions also announced the formation of a religious liberty task force within the DOJ to protect religious organizations from discrimination. Kellie Fiedorek, legal counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom, says this new initiative will further the DOJ’s work in this area, adding that the action demonstrated a renewed commitment to protecting this fundamental freedom.
“… and recognizing that regardless of what your beliefs [or convictions] might be, that all Americans should be free to peacefully live out those beliefs in their lives, at work, at school – and to see that commitment coming from the United States attorney general is incredibly encouraging,” she continues.
Sessions pointed out that there’s a human cost when the government fails to protect religious liberty. Fiedorek agrees, explaining that too many clients ADF represents are risking their businesses, their life savings, and their safety to follow their conscience.
