TEXT: Matthew 6:16-18

16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;

18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

—–

When fasting, we ought not to go about with a sad countenance or disfigured faces so that it can appear to others that we are fasting. Jesus rebuked this habit of the Pharisees and professional religious folk of His day. They were simply seeking man’s applause, and that is what they got.

Jesus then tells us how His followers should fast. “Thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.” Washing the face is something we do, or ought to do, every morning, especially if we plan on going out in public. It would be ludicrous not to wash one’s face just to show that one is fasting. The people of the ancient near east also anointed themselves with oil on a daily basis. According to the Jewish Encyclopedia, this was done “as a means of soothing the skin in the fierce heat of the Palestinian climate. Oil seems to have been applied to the exposed parts of the body, especially to the face. Anointing also accompanied a bath and was done especially before a feast. It was only omitted in mourning as a sign of grief, and resumed to indicate that mourning was over.”

Our fasting ought to be done as unto God. Thus, there is no reason why we should attempt to notify people (except where necessary) that we are engaging in this spiritual discipline. Like prayer, it should be carried out “in secret” before our Father who is “in secret.” Any violation of this is likely due to a desire to impress others with our spirituality, which negates the whole purpose of the fast.

John Piper wrote: “Fasting is an intensely Godward act. Do it toward God who sees when others don’t. Jesus is testing the reality of God in our lives. Do we really have a hunger for God himself, or a hunger for human admiration? What Jesus is doing with these words in Matthew 6 is testing our hearts to see if God himself is our treasure. He is pressing fasting from the external to the radically internal, and making it a sign of our true Godwardness. To Judaism, a fast was an outward sign of an inward condition. To Jesus, a fast was an inward sign of an inward condition. He is testing to see if the admiration of other people or even the spiritual effect on others of our piety has become the God-supplanting food that entices our soul. How do we feel when nobody else knows what we are doing? How is it when no one is saying, ‘How goes the fast?’ Are we content in God when no one but God knows that we have done what we ought to have done?”

Secret spiritual labor bring about long-lasting spiritual fruit. May we fast in secret that we may gain the spiritual benefits of time spent disciplining ourselves before the Lord.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
