Retired US Astronaut Scott Kelly Marries His Long-time Girlfriend Who Stood by Him When He Spent a Record-Breaking Year Away in Space

Retired US astronaut Scott Kelly has married his long-time girlfriend who stood by him when he spent a record-breaking year away in space.

The 54-year-old tied the knot with Amiko Kauderer, 44, in their hometown of Houston, Texas, last weekend.

Kelly shared several photos on social media as he announced news of their nuptials.

‘Amiko Kauderer and I are happily married!,’ Kelly tweeted on Wednesday.

‘We were very honored to have (Houston Mayor) Sylvester Turner officiate our wedding here in our hometown Houstin, Texas overlooking Discovery Green last weekend. We’ll be sharing more from our weekend wedding & what’s next for us soon!’

Kauderer, who used to work as a public relations officer at Nasa, followed up with a tweet featuring two emojis – a bride and an astronaut.

The couple, who have been together eight years, spent 12 months doing long distance when Kelly went to the International Space Station from March 2015 to March 2016.

They were able to speak over the phone whenever they liked and video chat once a week while he was 250 miles above Earth.

Kelly, who has two daughters from his first marriage, divorced his wife Leslie in 2009.

The astronaut spent a total of 340 days in space on the record-breaking mission with Russian colleague Mikhail Kornienko as they completed 5,440 laps around the planet and logged 143.8 million miles.
