A clash of cultures is inevitable at any World Cup, but what happened to a female reporter last week is out of bounds no matter where it occurred.
Reporter Julieth Gonzalez Theran was reporting on the tournament from Saransk, Russia, last Friday when a man ran up to her during a live shot, grabbed her breast, kissed her on the cheek and ran away.
Gonzalez Theran, who was working for German TV station Deutsche Welle’s Spanish news channel, continued her report as if nothing had happened.
“I had been at the scene for two hours to prepare for the broadcast and there had been no interruptions,” Gonzalez Theran said. “When we went live, this fan took advantage of the situation. But afterwards, when I checked to see if he was still there, he was gone.”
