How to Encourage Yourself in the Lord, by Daniella Whyte

Scripture Says: “And David was greatly distressedbut David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.- 1 Samuel 30:6

Has anyone ever walked up to you and said a word of encouragement on a day when you may have needed it most? If so, didn’t you feel better after-wards? Yes, we all need encouragement at some point in our lives. But sometimes, when everyone else is sour and sad and is trying to get you discouraged, you have to be like Joshua, Caleb, and David, and keep looking to Jesus for encouragement and strength.

Do you remember in Numbers 13 and 14 when Moses sent Joshua and Caleb along with ten other men to search out the land? (Read both chapters when you get the chance.) After they searched the land and came back to the camp where Moses and the children of Israel were, the ten men gave a discouraging report. Even though the land flowed with milk and honey and even though they brought back good fruit from the land, they chose to discourage the people from going into the land because of the men of a great stature that were there. Joshua 14:8 says that the other ten men made the heart of the people melt. They discouraged the people from going into the land that God promised them.

On the other hand, Joshua and Caleb gave an encouraging report. “And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it(Numbers 13:30). Joshua and Caleb knew about the giants in the land. But they also knew that God was always with them.

You see, other people around you will give a discouraging report, just like the ten men did, but you have to be like Joshua and Caleb and look on the sunny side of things and have faith that God is with you.

If you get to feeling discouraged, listen to some uplifting music. Also, pray and ask God to fill you with His joy and peace. Perhaps some of your friends are not Christians and being around them weakens your faith in God. My advice to you is, go and fellowship with other Christians and soak up the encouragement of the older women of faith, or be like David, and encourage yourself in the Lord; that is, just spend time talking to God and reading His Word.

Remember that you were made by God, chosen by God, and purposed by God for greatness. Encourage yourself in His promises.
