Meghan Markle Broke Tradition to Deliver a Speech at her Wedding Reception

After a whirlwind of a royal wedding, Meghan Markle still had time to break new ground as a member of the royal family. According to multiple reports, the newly-minted Duchess of Sussex gave a speech at the evening reception, going against royal tradition.

Though guests are staying tight-lipped about the reception, The Daily Mail reported that Meghan made a speech to the around 200 guests at the evening event. She was said to have thanked the royal family for welcoming her.

Kensington Palace confirmed Meghan’s plans to speak in a statement to People released before the big day. The move breaks royal tradition, according to the Sunday Times, and was said to be an “affectionate” tribute to Prince Harry and would offer thanks to her friends, her family, and the Queen.

Traditionally, the bride’s father gives a speech at the wedding reception. Meghan’s father, Thomas, bowed out of attending the wedding after undergoing heart surgery. But the Sunday Times reported Meghan had wanted to speak for herself long before Thomas decided not to attend the wedding.
