A small black church in Winston-Salem, N.C., was destroyed by fire just hours after congregants held a Sunday night worship service there.
Around 3 AM on Monday morning, a blaze was reported at the New Gospel Tabernacle Holiness Church. Firefighters put out the flames, but not before the structure had been gutted. There were no injuries reported, and investigators have not yet declared a cause.
The pastor of the church, Wallice Hairston, told the media, “We’re devastated. But we will work to rebuild. You can’t stop the church. Keep us in your prayers.”
According to the Charlotte News & Observer, “The blaze collapsed the roof and the floor of the church and one wall of the building fell against a neighboring home.” But firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading.
