Jerrod William Baum said he had never “killed an innocent before,” according to court documents released Thursday.
The 41-year-old Juab County man reportedly told his girlfriend it was “too bad” that he had to kill two teenagers who had spent time with her. According to the girlfriend, Baum didn’t want her to have any male friends.
And that transgression purportedly led Baum to kidnap and use a knife to kill 17-year-old Brelynne “Breezy” Otteson and her boyfriend, 18-year-old Riley Powell, and throw their bodies down a mine shaft near Eureka.
Baum was booked into the Utah County jail on Wednesday on suspicion of two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated kidnapping and two counts of abuse or desecration of a human body.
Also Wednesday, Utah County officials recovered two bodies from inside an abandoned mine shaft, believed to be the two Eureka teens.
