Alabama Police Officer Killed After 2-Hour Standoff With Suspect

A police officer was shot and killed late Tuesday night in Mobile, Ala., and a suspect also died after barricading himself in a home, FOX 10 reported.

The slain officer was identified as Justin Billa, Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste said. Battiste identifed the shooter as Robert Hollie.

Billa had been responding to the home of a suspect in another homicide earlier in the evening, authorities said.

In that incident, a woman was found dead in the middle of the road with a gunshot wound. Police quickly identifed Hollie as a “person of interest” in that killing and went to a home associated with Hollie, Battiste said.

After shooting Billa, Hollie barricaded himself in the home at approximately 12:30 a.m. local time as SWAT units descended on the area, police said. The barricade situation ended approximately two hours later.

Chief Battiste said his officers fired shots at the suspect, but it was unclear if he died from those shots or self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
