Lincoln Center honored former American Express CEO Kenneth I. Chenault and the late Luther Vandross at its first Winter Gala at Alice Tully Hall on Tuesday.
“I’m very appreciative of receiving the honor. I’m also very appreciative of one of the perks that comes along with it. Everyone may not know this, but as the evening’s honoree, [I] get to select the theme of [the gala’s] entertainment, so [this is] for all you Luther Vandross fans,” he told the crowd after passing the torch to current AmEx CEO Stephen Squeri.
Rachel Brown, Justin Guarini, Jennifer Holliday, Brian McKnight and spouses Alicia Hall Moran and Jason Moran each interpreted various hits by the late Vandross throughout the evening.
Dionne Warwick was supposed to host the event, but Holliday stepped in after Warwick canceled due to a last-minute scheduling conflict.
Patti LaBelle closed the night performing “Here and Now” before the other singers joined her onstage.
The event raised $2.6 million.
