TEXT: Ephesians 6:18-20
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel,
20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
We are in a series of messages titled “Praying Through the Bible: A Series on Every Passage and Verse Regarding Prayer in the Bible.” The purpose of this series is to encourage and motivate you to pray to the God of the Bible. We highlighted each of these over 500 verses and passages in the Prayer Motivator Devotional Bible. So far, we have completed 280 messages in this series.
This is message #281 titled, How to Win at Spiritual Warfare Through Prayer, Part 9.
Today, we are going to continue looking at intercession as a form of the “all prayer” that we are to use in spiritual warfare. Intercession is praying on behalf of someone else, bringing their requests and needs before God. Think of it as a lawyer pleading his client’s case before a judge.
In the Gospels, we have vivid examples of active intercession — one person bringing a request before God the Son. For example, the friends of a paralyzed man tore up a roof to get their sick friend to Jesus, a Roman centurion brought the suffering of his servant before the Lord, and a Canaanite woman begged Jesus to deliver her daughter from demon-possession. Maybe the people who benefitted from the answers to these prayers did not know enough to pray for themselves. But all they needed was someone else who interceded, someone else who intervened, someone else who took their place before God and brought their need to Him in the Name of Jesus.
That is what intercession is: We stand in the shoes of others and bring their needs before God in prayer just as we would bring our own. While some may have a special gift of intercession, all christians should intercede for others. In this very passage, Paul writes, “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; and FOR ME.” Paul asks his spiritual children to intercede for him, to lift him and his needs up in prayer before God. It is very easy to get caught up in supplication — asking for our own needs, which we covered last week. But it is beneficial to do the work of intercession because it reminds us that we are not the only ones who need prayer; others are often suffering far worse things.
In spiritual warfare, it is good to take the focus off of ourselves and the fiery darts the devil is throwing our way and to pray for a brother or sister who is fighting the same fight or worse. The temptations we face are common to all. We ought not to think it strange when fiery trials come upon us. Instead of being concerned about yourself all of the time, take some time out to show concern for others by interceding for them. They need the extra protection and assurance that comes from prayer just as much as you do.

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
