While the rest of the White House was reeling from the big GOP loss in Alabama on Tuesday night, Melania Trump — blissfully, it seemed — did the work of first lady.
Continuing a tradition that became an annual staple for her recent predecessors, Trump joined children from military families as they sorted gifts that had been donated to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots campaign, an annual holiday drive, at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling.
“It is my hope that during this holiday season people will remember it is not about gifts. It is about family, service and gratitude,” Trump said in remarks before thanking the families in attendance.
Dressed in a festive green coat and slacks, she dropped a Lego set in a box marked for boys and a “Hello Kitty” toy in a box marked for girls. She gave hugs to a few of the children, who had dressed up for the occasion. Several girls wore velvet and taffeta dresses.
