TEXT: Numbers 11:31-34

31 And there went forth a wind from the Lord, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day’s journey on this side, and as it were a day’s journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.

32 And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.

33 And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord smote the people with a very great plague.

34 And he called the name of that place Kibroth-hattaa-vah: because there they buried the people that lusted.



James Clear, author of “The Quick Start Guide to Intermittent Fasting,” writes regarding daily intermittent fasting: “Most of the time, I follow the LeanGains model of intermittent fasting, which uses a 16-hour fast followed by an 8-hour eating period. You can start at 8am and stop at 4pm. Or you can start at 2pm and stop at 10pm. Do whatever works for you. I tend to find that eating around 1pm and 8pm works well because those times allow me to eat lunch and dinner with friends and family. Breakfast is typically a meal that I eat on my own, so skipping it isn’t a big deal.”


John Cassian said, “The church fathers have not given us only a single rule for fasting or a single standard and measure for eating, because not everyone has the same strength; age, illness, or delicacy of body create differences. But they have given us all a single goal: to avoid overeating and the filling of our bellies. A clear rule for self-control that has been handed down is this: stop eating while still hungry and do not continue until you are satisfied.”

According to The New England Journal of Medicine, “Obesity puts a strain on your whole circulatory system. This strain increases your risk for stroke. Obesity can lead to other stroke risk factors. Stroke risk factors include heart disease, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, lipid abnormalities, type 2 diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea.”

This is an uncomfortable subject for many of us, but if you listen and take heed, this particular series can not only change your life spiritually, but it can save your life physically.

Once the children of Israel got a hold of the meat that they had so long desired, they spread it out for themselves and began to feast upon it. God, of course, was displeased by their complaining, their discontent, and now by this display of gluttony. The Bible says, “the wrath of the Lord was kindled” and “while the flesh was yet between their teeth,” before they could even chew it, he “smote them with a very great plague.”

A disease, indirectly caused by their gluttony, spread rapidly throughout the camp killing many people. We don’t like to admit it, but many of the foods we consume on a regular basis are slowly killing us. According to NaturalOn, bread (even wheat bread) “causes blood sugar disruption, increases weight gain, speeds up the aging process, and greatly increases your risk of diabetes.” Sugar contributes to the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and causes spikes in blood sugar; it also causes weight gain and feeds cancer cells. Vegetable oils contain free radicals that damage cells and speed up the aging process. Fast food, most of which contains the three items just mentioned — bread, sugar, and vegetable oil, causes your arteries to slowly harden and clogs up the blood with cholesterol.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Gluttony — consuming the wrong foods and more food than is necessary — kills. The children of Israel found that out. They were not under any disillusionment about why so many of their people died. Note that in verse 34, the Bible does not say, “There they buried the people that died because of the plague.” Instead, it says, “There they buried the people that lusted [the people that desired meat and displayed a spirit of gluttony].” This story serves as a stark reminder that gluttony and bad eating habits come with a price.

PRACTICAL STEP: In “The RAVE Diet and Lifestyle,” Mike Anderson continues sharing why he recommends not using any vegetable oils. He writes, “Fried animal foods, such as fried chicken, are probably the most dangerous foods in existence because they combine high levels of saturated fat and cholesterol, with high levels of oil. In other words, your blood vessels are getting a triple-whammy when you eat fried animal foods. Even seemingly ‘innocent’ foods such as movie popcorn are dangerous as they are usually popped in coconut or palm oil, both of which are extremely high in saturated fat.”

Have problems with blood sugar regulation.
Have low blood pressure.
Take medications.
Are underweight.
Have a history of eating disorders.
Are a female who is trying to conceive.
Are pregnant or breastfeeding.

All that being said, intermittent fasting does have an outstanding safety profile. There is nothing “dangerous” about not eating for a while if you are healthy and well nourished overall.
