When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement on Monday, at least one person wasn’t surprised: Aaron Korsh, the creator of Suits, the USA legal drama that Meghan starred in for seven seasons.

Korsh told U.K. radio show Today on Radio 4 that he’d long anticipated Meghan’s relationship with Harry going the distance, and he and the rest of the Suits writers were planning to change the show’s course with that knowledge in mind. USA confirmed that Markle is leaving the show on Tuesday.

“I knew from a year ago that this relationship was burgeoning,” Korsh said. “And I had a decision to make because I didn’t want to intrude and ask her, ‘Hey what’s going on and what are you going to do?’ So collectively with the writers, we decided to take a gamble that these two people were in love and it was going to work out.”

Korsh added that planning for Meghan’s potential departure and having it fall through would be an easier plot to undo than not planning for it all, and then losing one of their key cast members unexpectedly.

“What we decided to do (was to) say, ‘Look, I would rather have good things happen to Meghan in her life,’ which would likely mean her leaving the show,” he added. “So let’s plan on that and it’s much easier to undo that, if it came to it, than to just plan on her staying forever and then finding out she’s going to go.”

He also said that he thought Meghan would be a natural fit in the royal family, and that her relationship with Harry is “like a fairytale.”

“She is just a natural in front of the camera, and her intelligence and poise,” he said. “I mean, if anyone could handle it, I’d say it was Meghan.”
