Dabrett Black, 32, of Lindale is suspected of killing trooper Damon Allen, 41, during a traffic stop Thursday afternoon. Black was taken into custody just west of Houston after a brief shootout and manhunt by authorities, according to social media posts and emergency scanners.
Allen was fatally shot Thursday afternoon in Freestone County after he pulled a vehicle over for a traffic violation.
After making contact with the driver, he returned to his patrol car when the suspect fired multiple shots from a rifle, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The fatal shooting of the trooper occurred just south of Fairfield along Interstate 45, about 90 miles south of Dallas. It happened about 4 p.m.
Black was then seen in Waller County, where he was in a shootout with law enforcement there before fleeing on foot. Authorities were able to find him near a field of hay bales, according to emergency scanner dispatches.
