Q: Hannibal is supposed to have been one of the great military geniuses of all time. What prevented him from marching on to Rome after the Cannae victory, and capturing it to become the ruler of the known world?
A: Procrastination.
Of course, Hannibal gave himself a lot of good reasons for not following up on his victory: his troops were battle-weary, winter was approaching, he needed siege boats, he had reason to believe that several of Rome’s allies might desert Rome and join him, and so on. But, later, he is said to have admitted that he made a great mistake in not striking promptly, exploiting the disarray of the Romans. If he had done so, the history of the world would have been quite different.
