Hurricane Nate made landfall in the United States as a Category One hurricane on Saturday evening. The storm will likely skirt over the mouth of the Mississippi River in Louisiana before making a second landfall in a few hours, this time in Mississippi. Meteorologists have recorded winds with speeds of up to 90 miles per hour in the core of the storm, which have been preceded by heavy rainfall along the coasts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Mitch Landrieu, the mayor of New Orleans, cautioned residents earlier on Saturday that the storm’s low strength in comparison to recent storms like Irma, Harvey and Maria were no reason to neglect preparing for Nate. “We’re in the fight now. The storm is on us,” Landrieu said. “It’s gonna to hit you hard, it’s gonna to hit you fast.” Landrieu was also reportedly displeased with some reveling New Orleanians who planned to hold “hurricane parties.”
