International Christian Herald Roundup (09/19/17). Here’s what’s happening in Christendom.
CHRISTIAN POST: A nondenominational church founded in 1992 that meets under a highway bridge in Texas so as to reach out to the local homeless celebrated its 25th anniversary this week. Jimmy Dorrell, lead pastor for Church Under the Bridge, described its anniversary service on Sunday as “very meaningful” and noted that it was preceded by their 12th annual “Walk for the Homeless.” The Waco-based congregation held its first service on Sept. 20, 1992, starting with five homeless men. Currently, they average approximately 300 people for weekly worship from a variety of backgrounds.
AP: A San Francisco Bay Area pastor who defrauded members of his congregation out of a million dollars in investments has been sentenced to nearly 24 years in prison. In announcing the sentencing Friday, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra called the case against Pastor Luther Feltus-Curry “despicable.” Feltus-Curry was convicted in February of felony theft and securities fraud.
CP: An Egyptian man has shared horrifying details about how Egyptian authorities are aiding networks of abductors who get paid by Islamic extremists to kidnap unsuspecting Coptic Christian girls, convert them to Islam and marry them off to Muslim men. In an interview with World Watch Monitor, a former Muslim man known only by the letter “G” admitted that he used to work alongside a Salafist network of kidnappers before he left the Islamic faith. G explained that although networks like the one that he was involved in have been around since the 1970s, they have now reached an all-time high during the era of Egypt President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
BCNN1: Jo Beth Young, the wife of Dr. Ed Young Sr., pastor of Houston’s Second Baptist Church, has gone home to be with the Lord at age 80. The two were married for 58 years and have three sons. She passed away on Sunday afternoon. Her funeral will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2017.
SBC THIS WEEK: An International Mission Board press release, following this week’s trustee meeting, has announced that IMB President David Platt will be voted on in the coming weeks to serve as teaching pastor at McLean Bible Church, a Southern Baptist Church in McLean, VA.
