William Paul Young, author of “The Shack” was on Super Soul Sunday July 9th with Oprah. The author discussed the story behind his bestselling book, faith & relationships, and his new book “Lies We Believe About God”.

Paul says he wrote much of the The Shack while traveling to and from his three jobs on a commuter train. He needed a Christmas gift for his six children, and his wife had been urging him to put his thoughts down on paper for years. The author revealed that he never expected his book to be read by anyone other than his close family and friends. (Not only did over 20 million people read the book, it became a successful faith based film with Octavia Spencer playing God).

In his latest book, Lies We Believe About God, William Paul Young explores the ideas of control and free will as it relates to faith and relationships.

“Relationship always introduces us to mystery,” Paul says, explaining that mystery is what leads to a loss of control in relationships. “As soon as God creates a being that can say no, there’s no control, or else love is forced. And if love is forced, that’s no love at all.”

Oprah asked the author why are we in this state of division in out country right now, and Paul shared that this is a fantastic opportunity and transition time. He went on to say that this is also a time of exposure.
