Logitech is one of the best known brands for PC peripherals, be it keyboards, mice, webcams, speakers, or headsets. The company is also doing well in mobile peripherals for gadgets such as the iPad $329.00 at Apple Store as well as smart home devices. PC gaming peripherals are also a focus, but Logitech wants in on the console gaming market so it just acquired Astro Gaming for $85 million in cash.
Astro’s focus is gaming headsets for “professional gamers and enthusiasts” in the console market. Logitech has its own gaming brand called Logitech G, but that’s focused on PC gaming, so you can see how the two brands can work well together. Logitech clearly does.
According to The Verge, Astro Gaming isn’t likely to disappear once the acquisition is finalized in August. Instead, the Logitech G and Astro Gaming brands will sit side-by-side and focus on what they do best separately: PC and console gaming.
While Astro may focus on enthusiasts for sales, it’s the professional market where I think Logitech sees an opportunity. More specifically, eSports is where the growth will be and Astro offers potential for sponsorship deals and becoming the brand we see all the pro eSports teams wearing during live streamed events. I’m sure Logitech is also thinking about branding collaborations, too. Maybe we’ll get a line of Astro Blizzard headsets in the future?
For now, don’t expect anything different. If you love Astro or Logitech’s headsets, they will remain available and models won’t change. I suspect Logitech will be able to streamline Astro’s manufacturing process behind the scenes and save some money there, though.
