Tennis pro Venus Williams is heartbroken after being involved in a car crash that left a 78-year-old man dead.
Williams, 37, broke her silence on the fatal crash, which occurred on June 9 in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., killing Jerome Barsons, noting she is keeping the family in her prayers.
“I am devastated and heartbroken by this accident,” she wrote Friday night in a Facebook post.
“My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Jerome Barson and I continue to keep them in my thoughts and prayers,” the athlete continued.
Williams is being sued for wrongful death by Barson’s family for failing to yield to the right of way when speeding through an intersection, despite a red light, according to a lawsuit obtained by TMZ.
Barson’s wife Linda was driving with her husband in the passenger seat when she T-boned Williams’ SUV after the athlete abruptly entered the intersection.
Williams was at fault for violating the right of way, according to a police report obtained by the gossip site. She reportedly blamed the crash on heavy traffic that led her car to be in the middle of the intersection.
