Christ Our Redeemer AME Church in Irvine offers children and youth a unique experience at its Christian Sports Camp.
The two-day event starts Friday, July 14, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., through Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The camp will be held at Mater Dei High School, 1201 West Idinger Ave., in Santa Ana.
“God gave us a vision to have a Christian Sports Camp, which is the first black faith-based sports camp in the history of Orange County,” said Pastor Mark E. Whitlock, Jr. “We have 30 open spots and invite girls and boys from ages 8-to-18 to participate.” The donation to attend is $25 per day.
The curriculum features ministers who will teach about Christian discipleship, retired professional athletes outlining the basic skills of basketball, baseball, football and track and field and instructing outdoor practice sessions in each sport. Also, breakfast and lunch will be served.
Facilitators include Reginald Berry and Mel Rogers, formerly with the NFL’s San Diego (now L.A.) Chargers; Keyon Dooling, formerly of the NBA’s L.A. Clippers; Ralph Botting and Gary Matthews, Jr., formerly of baseball’s L.A. Angels; and track star Arlise Emerson.
