Sarah Brazzle thought it was all a joke when three men in masks approached her and a friend as they walked to their cars in the South Loop early Tuesday.

Then she saw one of them had a gun.  “If you run, we’re going to shoot you,” the man said.

She turned and ran anyway.  Down an alley in the 2200 block of South Wabash Avenue and around the corner, circling back to check on her friend.

She found him on the ground.  He had been shot in the back while trying to run away too.

The friend, 27 years old, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where police said his condition was stabilized.

Police said Brazzle, 24, and her friend had walked into an armed carjacking just before 1:40 a.m. After stealing a gray 2006 BMW, the carjackers decided to rob them too, according to police.

Brazzle said she and friends were headed back to their cars after a night out in the area of Wabash and Cermak Road when they encountered the carjackers.

“I was scared they were going to shoot me,” she said.

As an ambulance left with the 27-year-old man, a man on Wabash kept screaming. Around the corner, Brazzle and other people stood outside a lounge.
