Over the past year, Gabby Douglas has worked to make sure her signature Barbie looks like her. So she was involved in selecting the wardrobe, offering input on hair texture and making sure the doll is as flexible as the Olympic gold medalist.
The Barbie, which goes on sale Monday, features a red, white and blue leotard and “It looks exactly like me,” said Douglas. “It was a really fun process.”
The Gabby Douglas Barbie is part of the Shero collection, which highlights women who break boundaries.
Douglas is no stranger to that. The 2012 Olympic all-around champion was the first black gymnast to win individual gold.
Douglas, 21, returned to win a second consecutive team Olympic gold in Rio.
She said she hopes her signature Barbie can encourage girls to be confident.
“I still want to continue to inspire young girls and to tell them to strive for your goals,” she said. “If you have the passion and if you have something that you love, just really go for it 100%, with all of your heart.”
The release of the doll is the latest post-Olympic venture for Douglas, who launched a line of lipsticks with Beauty Bakerie in March. Based in Los Angeles with her family, Douglas said she hopes to get into acting during her break from gymnastics.
“I’m really enjoying things I didn’t get to do because I was training,” she said. “Right now I’m just enjoying life and the amazing opportunities.”
