More Than $6000 Stolen from New Jersey Church, Police Look for Black Suspect

Police are searching for a man seen on surveillance video who is a suspect in the theft of more than $6,000 from St. Michael’s Church on Page Avenue.

The suspect entered the rectory around 6:47 a.m. Monday, police said. He asked a church employee for food from the food bank and was told to fill out a form. The church employee then left to retrieve the food.

He is seen on surveillance video leaving the rectory with bags of food and then entering the church vestibule before leaving at 7:18 a.m. and heading south on Ridge Road. He is also seen dropping an empty bag that had contained money.

The theft, of cash and checks taken from a closed but unlocked safe, was not discovered until the afternoon.

The suspect is African-American, 5’9″ with a heavy build and short black and gray hair, was wearing a dark jacket, gray sweatpants and glasses.
