As the Syrian civil war enters its sixth year, the total estimate of dead and missing in the violence has reached 465,000 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor, reported Monday. The fighting began when citizens started protesting President Bashar al-Assad’s government and human-rights record, and it has over the years pulled in other global and regional powers, including the U.S., Russia, and ISIS. The Islamic State terror group has gained large tracts of Syrian territory, while some 4.5 million fleeing civilians have created the world’s biggest refugee crisis since World War II.
