Netflix’s ‘Dear White People’ Hasn’t Been Released Yet and Nearly 300,000 Hate It

Netflix released the trailer for its new series “Dear White People” on Wednesday and by Friday afternoon, the trailer had received over 284,000 dislikes on YouTube.

The clip begins with a monologue from Samantha White, played by Logan Browning:

“Dear white people, here’s a list of acceptable Halloween costumes: pirate, slutty nurse, any of our first 43 presidents. Top of the list of unacceptable costumes? Me.”

A montage of people in black face follows suit.

Netflix says the tv show satirizes “‘post-racial’ America as students of color navigate a predominantly white Ivy League college.” The series is based on Justin Simien’s Sundance film of the same name.

Following the trailer’s release, YouTubers were quick to comment their disapproval of the series. Some claimed the show was “racist” and threatened to cancel their Netflix subscriptions. The hashtag #BoycottNetflix later materialized on Twitter.
