A white man and his adopted black son were allegedly turned away from a movie theater after staff did not believe the two were related.
Reuben Lee and his 17-year-old son Reuben Lee Jr., had gone to Regal Cinemas Holiday Stockton 8 in California on Sunday to watch XXX: Return of Xander Cage.
Lee, who is a pastor, was with a church deacon and five other teens who were allowed in the theater, however he and his son were not, Fox40 reported.
‘We’re this far along in life and, you know, you’re stuck as a parent trying to figure out how you’re going to explain to this man that I really am this child’s parent,’ Lee said.
Lee was the only white man in the group and claims the theater manager did not allow them in to see the PG-13 film until Reuben Jr’s parent or guardian was present.
‘He sort of smirked and said, “Well, like I said, parent, grandparent, legal guardian, you need to call one of them and have them come over here if you want to get in,”‘ Lee told the news station.
The father tried to explain to the manager that Reuben Jr was his son, but the two were denied admission.
Lee and his son were refunded for their tickets and were escorted off the property with an armed guard.
According to Regal Cinema’s admission policy, there are only regulations for films rated R or NC-17.
Lee’s wife, Nichole Lee, took to Facebook to express her anger about the incident.
‘My husband repeatedly informed the Manager Joe Cruz that Reuben was his son. When my husband asked what more could he do, the manager said bring his parents.
‘They were eventually escorted out by armed guards. Skin color does NOT define family!!!!!’, Mrs Lee said in the post which has been shared more than 700 times.
