A group of black students was allegedly racially abused and told to leave a restaurant by its manager because ‘Trump is president now’.
Ricky Lee Bugg Jr, who studies and plays basketball at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania, says he was eating with two friends at Just Wing It about 1:30am on Sunday when they were the victims of a shocking tirade.
Bugg told DailyMail.com everything seemed to be going smoothly before the manager got involved.
‘We ordered wings, a friend of mine ordered a beer. We had no problems with the waitress, we paid and it was fine,’ the 21-year-old said.
‘Then we went and sat up at the bar, which is right near the register, and that’s when this guy walked up – he had a beer in one hand and a stack of cash in the other.’
That’s when the alleged abuse started.
‘I don’t need you n***ers’ money,’ the manager raged, according to Bugg, before he walked to the back of the restaurant again.
The student said he was shocked by the abuse, and almost immediately decided with his friends to leave.
‘We decided we didn’t need to eat there and got our money back from the waitress,’ he said.
‘She was fine with it. But then he came back out, he must’ve realized we got the money back, and we exchanged words for a while.
‘I can’t remember exactly what I said, then I flipped a few chairs on the way out so then he started yelling: “get out n***ers, Trump’s president now I can do what I want”.
‘Then a woman who was there sort of pushed us out the store, acting like she agreed with him.’
Bugg said police later arrived on the scene and went inside to get the manager’s story, before coming back out to speak to him and his two friends.
Officers have told him they cannot take any action against the man for the alleged actions without confirming what happened.
The 21-year-old said he has received an incredible amount of support from students and professors since the alleged incident.
Other restaurant owners in town have invited him to their venues for a meal.
‘People have been so great. They’ve been saying, “don’t think we are all like this”,’ Bugg told DailyMail.com.
Lebanon Valley College issued a statement saying it ‘rejects all hatred and bias’, PennLive reports.
‘Racist attitudes in no way reflect the culture of our campus,’ spokeswoman Molly O’Brien-Foelsch said.
Bugg’s sister, Destiny, posted an account of the alleged incident on Facebook on Sunday night.
‘I’d love to say that this is the first incident of that manner that I’ve heard of or witnessed in that area, but it isn’t. And I’ve only heard of them more and more since Trump was elected. Is there a correlation? …You can be the judge of that,’ she wrote.
‘Please educate yourself. Please learn what’s happening to your brothers and sisters of different races, religions, and lifestyles.
‘This has very little to do with politics and everything to do with morals.’
It has been shared almost 3,000 times.
DailyMail.com contacted Just Wing It for comment. The restaurant has deactivated its social media page.
Students at the college said the restaurant has been closed for the past few days.
