Three Trump supporters from West Texas left a 25-year-old waitress a 625 per cent tip along with a heartwarming note.
Rosalynd Harris was working at Busboys and Poets in Washington D.C. on Monday. She assumed the three men at one of her tables were likely in town for President Trump’s inauguration.
She told WUSA9: ‘I could tell they were from the south because they had their cowboy hats on and I was like “Oh, you’re not from the city.”‘
Harris participated in the Women’s March two days before she met the men.
The men confirmed they were in town for the inauguration. They also complimented Harris’s smile and personality.
When the men left the restaurant, Harris came to their table to discover they left her a $450 tip on their $72 bill.
Along with the gratuity, the men wrote on the receipt: ‘We may come from different cultures and may disagree on certain issues, but if everyone would share their smile and kindness like your beautiful smile, our country will come together as one people.’
‘Not race. Not gender. Just American. God Bless!’
Harris was overwhelmed by the men’s words and generosity. She worked as a professional dancer and took extra shifts at the restaurants to pay bills.
She told the Washington Post: ‘You automatically assume if someone supports Trump that they have ideas about you.
‘But [the customer is] more embracing than even some of my more liberal friends, and there was a real authenticity in our exchange.
‘This definitely reshaped my perspective. Republican, Democrat, liberal are all subcategories to what we are experiencing. It instills a lot of hope.’
She is going to use the money to help pay up-front costs for her new apartment.
Harris said Busboys and Poets is a liberal, social justice oriented establishment. The restaurant’s description on its Facebook page reads: ‘Busboys and Poets is a community where racial and cultural connections are consciously uplifted.’
The restaurant posted a photo of the receipt to mostly positive reactions.
One person wrote: ‘God Bless them and God keep blessing America. This is absolutely beautiful to see.’
Another said: ‘So true & we must continue to lift each other.’
A few people criticized the men with one person writing: ‘I love Busboys and Poets, but this seems incredibly tone deaf to me. It reeks of “All Lives Matter” and “colorblind” sentiments. $450 won’t make systemic oppression go away.’
