President-elect Donald Trump will meet on Monday with Martin Luther King III, his incoming communications director said on Twitter.
There had been reports that Trump would be visiting the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture to observe Martin Luther King Day, but scheduling conflicts apparently derailed the plan.
“Today we observe the birthday of #MartinLutherKing – @realDonaldTrump will meet with Martin Luther King III to discuss his legacy #MLKDAY,” Sean Spicer tweeted on Monday morning.
The president elect followed Spicer’s tweet with one of his own honoring the civil rights icon: “Celebrate Martin Luther King Day and all of the many wonderful things that he stood for. Honor him for being the great man that he was!”
Trump has had an active weekend as he prepares to be sworn in on Friday as the 45th president, giving interviews in which he signaled an openness to working with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a nuclear reduction deal to ease American sanctions, and talked up his desire to have “insurance for everybody” as his incoming administration replaces Obamacare.
