Joe Barry’s stint as Washington Redskins defensive coordinator is over after two disappointing seasons.
The team announced Thursday that Barry, along with defensive backs coach Perry Fewell, defensive line coach Robb Akey and head strength and conditioning coach Mike Clark, will not be retained on Jay Gruden’s staff. Each coach was with the Redskins since 2015.
Barry’s dismissal comes after the Washington defense ranked No. 28 in the NFL as the Redskins fell short of the playoffs. The team also was dismal in the run game, allowing 119.8 yards per game (No. 24 in the NFL). Opposing teams rushed for 140 yards or more in each of the final three games of the Redskins’ playoff push, which ended with a 19-10 loss to the New York Giants in the regular-season finale.
