TEXT: John 20:30-31:
30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.
This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 360.
Frederick Buechner said, “For millions of people, the birth of Jesus made possible not just a new way of understanding life but a new way of living it. It is a truth that, for twenty centuries, there have been untold numbers of men and women who, in untold numbers of ways, have been so grasped by the Child who was born, so caught up in the message He taught and the life He lived, that they have found themselves profoundly changed by their relationship with Him.”
In the last Bond film, Spectre, there’s a scene where James Bond calls Moneypenny and asks her to look up information on a person whom everyone believes is dead. Bond says, “Check his files before and after his death.” Moneypenny responds incredulously, “After his death, what are you talking about?” And Bond says, “Just do it.” Of course, it seems odd to look for information on a person after they have died. But in order to get the full story on Jesus Christ, we must look at the records before and after His death. And that is what John provides us in his Gospel.
As we learned in our last message, John wrote his Gospel with a purpose. In his account of all of Jesus’ words and deeds, his purpose was to convince his readers to believe. Believe, as we learned, means to “commit one’s trust unto” someone. Why should a person believe in Jesus Christ? What happens when a person believes in Jesus Christ? John says, “that believing ye might have life through his name.” Believing in Christ results in Life.
John wrote his Gospel so that we might begin a relationship with the living Savior — the operative word being “living.” Historians try to collect and record everything they possibly can about dead individuals. They aim to create as complete a record as possible. But that is not what John does. As he stated, there were “many things” that he did not write about. Instead, he tells us enough about Christ to introduce us to Him. He wants us to begin a personal relationship with the living Christ, and in so doing, we will get to know Him better. We will not need books to tell us everything about Him because we will know Him ourselves.
This personal relationship with Christ results in “life.” Life is an important word in the Gospel of John; he uses it at least 36 times. If we gain life through Jesus Christ, it implies that we are dead without Christ. Modern psychology teaches that people are sick, mentally ill, or imbalanced, and that they can be healed with the right counseling, teaching, practices, or lifestyle changes. But, the Bible teaches that man in his natural state is an animated corpse, one of the “walking dead.” And only Christ can make him alive.
That is what John means when he says we gain life “through his name.” The name of Jesus encompasses His entire person — all that He is and all that He wants us to be. We cannot find true, eternal life outside of Christ. What does this “life” entail? Dr. Warren Wiersbe stated, “Eternal life is not ‘endless time,’ for even lost people are going to live forever in hell. ‘Eternal life’ means the very life of God experienced today. It is a quality of life, not a quantity of time. It is the spiritual experience of ‘heaven on earth’ today. The Christian does not have to die to have this eternal life; he possesses it in Christ today.”
Certainly, you desire this kind of life. John invites all people to come out of the cold, dark world and into the warmth, brightness, and light of Christ. Are you concerned about your sins? They have been taken care of on the cross. Are you worried or afraid? Christ gives peace. Are you looking for direction in life? Christ gives purpose? Are you weak, downtrodden, depressed? Christ gives power to overcome all things in Him.
One of the verses frequently quoted around Christmastime each year is from Isaiah. He said, “The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.” The light is not a thing, but a person. Jesus Christ, the One whose birth we commemorate at Christmas, stated, “I am the Light of the world.” The Bible states, “In him is life, and that life is the light of men.”
Earlier in his Gospel, John said, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.” Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ right now and you can have eternal, abundant life today.
Charles Wesley wrote:
Come, Thou long-expected Jesus, born to set Thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us; let us find new life in Thee.
Born Thy people to deliver, born a child, and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever, now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone;
by Thine own sufficient merit, raise us to Thy glorious throne.
Believe in Jesus Christ today and let Him free you from your sins and fears; let him give you eternal life. Here is how:
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
