Trump Slams UN Resolution Seeking to Halt Israeli Settlements

Donald Trump waded into the Israeli-Palestinian dispute on Thursday, urging a U.S. veto of a United Nations resolution seeking to halt Israeli settlements on disputed land.

“As the United States has long maintained, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will only come through direct negotiations between the parties, and not through the imposition of terms by the United Nations,” Trump said in a written statement.

“This puts Israel in a very poor negotiating position and is extremely unfair to all Israelis,” he said.

Trump’s statement follows a similar call by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has clashed repeatedly with President Obama over Israeli settlements.

In an early morning tweet, Netanyahu said the United States “should veto the anti-Israel resolution at the U.N. Security Council on Thursday.”
