New details have emerged in a Hendersonville attack early Saturday morning in which two people were found dead, and the husband of the late country music trailblazer Jean Shepard appears to have been injured.
Sgt. Jim Vaughn of the Hendersonville Police Department said one of the deceased, 21-year-old Travis Sanders, died from a gunshot wound, and that police were not searching for a suspect in his death or in the stabbings of two others.
The attacks took place at the Elnora Court home of Benny Birchfield, the 79-year-old husband of Shepard, who died at 82 in September.
Vaughn said police received a phone call about a stabbing at the home on the 200 block of Elnora Court around 3 a.m. Saturday.
He said when police arrived, a 79-year-old man was in the front yard of the home and wounded. The man, according to police, stated he had been stabbed. Vaughn declined to reveal the name of the man, but records show the address matches the residence of Birchfield, who is 79, and the former residence of Shepard. Birchfield, a musician, and Shepard had been married since 1968.
Inside the house, where the attacks took place, police found Sanders, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Sanders died from a .38 caliber gunshot wound, Vaughn said. They also found 18-year-old Icie Hawkins, a granddaughter of Birchfield who was transported to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Hawkins was stabbed, police said.
