Marriage is God-ordained, but it isn’t always easy. A popular gospel artist is dishing the truth on what it truly takes to win at love.

After dual affairs nearly ended the high-profile Christian couple’s union, Tye Tribbett and his wife Shante’ Tribbett, whom he affectionately calls “My Taylah,” are triumphantly celebrating 19 years of marriage.

In a new Instagram post, amid the celebration, the GRAMMY® Award-winning gospel singer gets honest about the struggles of making a marriage work.

“Love is not just the butterflies in the belly, or skipping through the fields hand in hand, or blushing on the other line saying ‘no you hang up first’ nor is it the story book fantasy of ecstasy or a frenzy of poetic inspiration,” wrote the BET’s Joyful Noise host, 40.

Tribbett continued, “NO!!! Love is also a tough self-denying choice and commitment that’s not always favorable to our emotions.”

Both learned this lesson the hard way when, in 2009, the “He Turned It” songwriter had an affair with a woman from his choir, Greater Anointing — known as G.A. He said the indiscretion was with a young lady he and his wife had counseled. According to a 2010 Associated Press interview, he admitted, the relationship became “her and I more than the three of us. It got out of control.”

After his wife learned of Tribbett’s infidelity, she retaliated with a notorious affair of her own with Christian rapper Da T.R.U.T.H., real name, Emmanuel Lee Lambert, Jr.—Tribbett’s then friend and music collaborator.

Though the couple separated for a time, through forgiveness, counseling and time, they made it through the storm.

Tribbett, who views the restoration of his marriage through a spiritual lens, wrote on Instagram, “God loved us so that He ‘gave’ His son”—noting, that “gave involved DEATH by the way.”

Using the analogy of death, the celebrated artist who took a sabbatical after the personal failure added, “Love is bloody…..and I’m so glad to have a woman tough enough, strong enough and committed enough to keep choosing to love ME!”
