New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski will undergo surgery for a herniated disc in his back Friday and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

In a statement Thursday night, the Patriots acknowledged that they did not expect to have Gronkowski back in the regular season or playoffs, though they would wait until after the surgery to make that determination official.

“Rob has always been one of our hardest workers and was voted captain for the leadership he provides on our team,” the Patriots wrote in their statement. “We are deeply saddened any time a player is lost to injury. We are committed to assisting Rob throughout his recovery and look forward to his return to playing football for the New England Patriots.”

Gronkowski, who’s missed three games with various ailments this season, did not finish Sunday’s win against the New York Jets after injuring his back.
