It’s a dark day in world of the Dallas Cowboys, as the mother of Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith has passed away.
The news came via former teammate and fellow Hall of Fame Cowboys player Michael Irvin, via Twitter, as he offered up his prayers and condolences to Smith’s family.

Smith and Irvin teamed up to help lead the Cowboys to three separate Super Bowl wins in the 1990s and have remained the deepest of friends far into their retirement from football. A player near and dear to the hearts of the entire nation of Cowboys fans, Smith has always been the epitome of what a football player and a human being should be.
While it is unclear when Mary Clements Smith passed, what is clear is how unfathomably difficult it must be for the Smith family to lose her.
Emmitt himself posted a heartfelt message on Instagram to honor his mother.
I’ve lost many things in my life but nothing like the loss of my first Love, my mother. My heart is truly aching at this moment because I will never ever hear her voice again. I am so eternally grateful because she left me with so much wisdom that I now share with my kids. As we go through this period of adjustment as a family, I can hear her voice saying get up and get back in the game. Mom, you will be forever missed and always treasured. I love you and thanks for all you have given.
