TEXT: John 19:28-30:
28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.
This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”
This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 315.
John Piper said, “Christ is our attorney and His portfolio is His propitiation. He stands before His Father in heaven, and every time we sin, He doesn’t make a new propitiation. He doesn’t die again and again. Instead, He opens his portfolio and lays the exhibits of Good Friday on the bench before the Judge. Photographs of the crown of thorns, the lashing, the mocking soldiers, the agonies of the cross, and the final cry of victory: It is finished.”
We return to the scene of the crucifixion, where scholars believe Jesus had hung on the cross for about three hours by the time we get to verse 28. The Romans had devised the crucifixion method in order to prolong the suffering of the victim. During this time, God allowed the sin of the world to be rolled on Jesus’ shoulders. Every lie, every murder, every act of adultery, every thought of hatred, every moment of lust, every covetous intention — all the sin that we can think of and more was placed on Jesus. “He was made sin for us.”
Throughout the ordeal, Jesus was fully aware of what was happening. Apparently, there was a moment when the transfer of sin was complete. John describes Jesus as “knowing that all things were now accomplished.” Everything that Jesus had come to do up until that point was completed. He had shown mankind how to live a perfect life in communion with God. He had maintained His innocence in the face of false accusations, lies, slander, and the most rigged trial in history. He had fulfilled all of the prophecies that had been spoken of Him in the Old Testament. And, now, He hung on the cross undergoing the most unjust execution in history.
Once again, in order to fulfill prophecy, Jesus spoke, saying, “I thirst.” David spoke of this moment in Psalm 69. A soldier filled a sponge with vinegar, put it on a hyssop stalk and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. “When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” What was finished when Jesus spoke? The great transaction in which Jesus took upon Himself all the sins of all the people who ever lived — past, present, and future — and God poured out the wrath that all those people deserved on Jesus.
“It is finished.” Dr. John Walvoord and Dr. Roy Zuck said, “The sixth word or saying that Jesus spoke from the cross was the single Greek word, ‘te-te-les-tai.’ Papyrus receipts for taxes have been recovered with the word ‘te-te-les-tai’ written across them, meaning ‘paid in full.’ This word on Jesus’ lips was significant. When He said, ‘It is finished’ (not ‘I am finished’), He meant His redemptive work was completed. He had been made sin for people and had suffered the penalty of God’s justice which sin deserved.”
We often speak of Jesus as being punished for our sins or being killed by the Romans and the Jews, or being sacrificed by God for sin. But it is more accurate to speak of Jesus as the active agent in all these events. Jesus took our punishment upon Himself. Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross. No one took Jesus’ life from Him; He gave it up of His own free will. That is why John writes, “He gave up the ghost.” He, of His own will, let go of life because He knew He had to die in our place. Because He wanted to die in our place. Even on the cross, He was not the victim, but the victor.
Anne Steele wrote:
Stretched on the cross, the Savior dies,
Hear His expiring groans arise;
See, how the sacred crimson tide
Flows from His hands, His feet, His side.
Can I survey this scene of woe,
Where mingling grief and wonder flow,
And yet my heart unmoved remain,
Insensible to love or pain?
Come, dearest Lord, Thy grace impart,
To warm this cold, this sinful heart,
Till all its powers and passions move,
In melting grief, and ardent love.
On the cross, Jesus took your sin upon Himself. He died a death that you deserve to die and paid the debt that you owe to God. He paid it in full. But you must place your faith and trust in Him if you want to take advantage of that great gift and be free from sin and the punishment of sin forever. Here is how you can do that today.
First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”
Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”
Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”
Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.
If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
