Some pint-sized McDonald’s fans may soon be a little happier starting Monday.

That’s when the fast-food giant will begin testing a breakfast Happy Meal. If the try-out is successful, the all-day breakfast offering could be rolled out nationally next year.

The kid-focused breakfast items will be available at 73 McDonald’s restaurants in the Tulsa, Okla., area. Their introduction is coming soon after the debut of an expanded all-day breakfast menu, which, since launching last October has proven to be a boon to McDonald’s flagging bottom line.

Adding breakfast would mark the first major new choice to the Happy Meal, another McDonald’s hit, in more than three decades, company officials say.

“All day breakfast has really been a big hit with our customers, and that started from our customers telling us this is what they wanted,’’ says Pam Williams, a director of innovation at McDonald’s USA. “Since the launch of all day breakfast, more of our customers have been reaching out to us and asking us for these choices for their kids In the Happy Meals.’’

Happy Meals customers will have a choice between two McGriddles, or a new Egg & Cheese McMuffin that comes without Canadian bacon. Kids can also pick two sides – apple slices or yogurt, or, at lunch and dinner, kids’ fries. Hash browns will also be an option at certain restaurants.
