A bomb threat at the US Military Academy at West Point Thursday led police to evacuate the area but turned out to be bogus.

The New York State Police deemed the potential threat a false alarm as of 11:30 a.m. – about an hour after an individual on the grounds went to the Visitors Center on
New South Post Road and said there was a “bomb” in a nearby vehicle, authorities said.

The vehicle was checked and cleared of any explosives, officials said.

West Point spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Kasker said in a statement that the area was evacuated as a precaution.

Though the area was deemed safe, authorities are still investigating.
