USA Men’s Basketball Team Beats Spain to Advance to Gold-medal Game

The United States defeated Spain 82-76 on Friday to move into the gold medal game of the men’s basketball tournament in Rio.

Klay Thompson led the U.S. with 22 points. Pau Gasol was the leading scorer for Spain with 23 points.

The U.S. had expected to see Spain again, whether it was for the gold medal, as in the last two Olympics, or just for the chance to play for gold.

The world’s top teams met in the semifinals, with Spain getting another chance to finish the job against the U.S. after being oh-so-close in the last two gold-medal games in 2012 and 2008.

In the other game, Australia plays Serbia at 6 p.m. ET Both teams came close in their games against the U.S.
